Boy + Bike =

An eventful last few days! My Surfer Boy came unstuck after landing a jump on his new BMX bike on Saturday. When a human head hits a steel handlebar trauma ensues. Fortunately he was wearing his helmet, never lost consciousness and he didn't break his neck but he did sustain a facial laceration, fractured maxilla (upper jaw), lost three perfect teeth and loosened a few others. Facial laceration was stitched locally then off he went to the major city hospital for specialist treatment late that night. He underwent surgery on Sunday evening to remove the broken jaw, the teeth and stitch the inside of the mouth. I hate seeing the lost teeth, such a waste but the fractured jaw just can't hold them in place. If you click on the second photo you will see he has his teeth splint together at the front to stabilise the wobbly ones. Surfer Boy will have to have bone graft surgery to repair his jaw and then may be able to have permanently implanted teeth but not until he has stopped growing. Surfer Boy is the typical 16 year old 'push it to the limit' invincible boy that all parents fear. We are all slowly recovering and coming to terms with the result of Surfer Boys moment of joy at landing a humongous jump at the local bike track only to then plough into a pile of uncleared junk on the track. School Holidays are so much fun. NOT!

I would also like to say "Thank You" to all the kind friends, family, neighbours and acquaintances who have stepped up in the last few days for our family, you are all very appreciated. Also apologies to anyone who's stomach has turned seeing the horrifying photos. I thought B/W photos weren't quite so hideous to view.

Surfer Boy thinks he will be back surfing in about 4 weeks and the bike might yet be chopped into tiny pieces by a vengeful mother!

Ouch!! And I bet he will be back doing it again as soon as you aren't looking! LOL. I hope your nerves last till he reaches adulthood.

Poor Surfer Boy. We had a trip to emergency today with a split chin- a walk in the park in comparison.

Oh and I am so glad they are B&W photos!

Oh poor SB and poor you. I am glad things are OK now. And they are such nice teeth: I made a necklace from one of my teeth and a leather thong back in the 70s!!!!

OMG! How horrific..painful and traumatic! :( Thank goodness something can be done to save the teeth later..hopefully the wait is not too long.. I have a 9yo girl who had broken 4 bones by the age of 6 so understand what you have gone though to some extent.. facial injuries are far worse though. Thanks for the B&W version! Gx

Oh Lisa --- you must be stressed to the limit! I'm so sorry about the lost teeth. Hope Surfer Boy heals up quickly and well.

I would be chopping up the bike too.

My husband took a sledge hammer to my weight bench after I cut my finger all the way through the bone on it. Vengeful Mom, Vengeful Husband ... same thing.

The hardest part is that we would like to wrap them in cottonwool but just cant! Thank goodness is wasn't any worse and modern medicine is as amazing as it is-sending you hugs. Hope he heals quickly.

OOh Lisa i am sorry to read this, I know exactly what you've gone through!!

Did you happen to see the news tonight, a boy actually died at a bmx track yesterday.

We can be thankful that both our sons are alive.

Lisa...being a mom is not for the faint of heart, is it?

And Surfer Boy? Oh I already know he will be blessed with children Just Like Him. (that is if his 'jewels' survive till adulthood!) btw, he's still darn cute...

Fortitude!

Oh my goodness .... I hope he is recovering nicely. Poor thing ... that's quite a big ouchie.

But the funny thing ...he'll hop right back on that bike I bet.

Take care and give him lots of hugs.

Oh no! I'm so sorry this happened. Our brave ones wear their dare devil stunt mishaps for life, makes for interesting topics of conversation to talk about where each scare came from, but doesn't do a bit of good for Mom's nerves, especially at the time it happened!
